Introduction

The Medical University of Varna is Bulgaria’s third-largest medical school. It has more than a half-century of history and traditions. Varna’s Medical University uses the latest technologies for education, such as 3D anatomy models and an e-learning system, besides the traditional university teaching systems. The Medical University of Varna is a member of the European University Association (EUA) and one of the founding members of the Black Sea Universities Network (BSUN). The university gained the trust of more than 82 educational partners from around the world.

In 2008, the Medical University of Varna became the first university in Bulgaria to implement the European Foundation for Quality Management system (EFQM) for Business Excellence. All countries in the European Union recognize the university’s diplomas. It became a home for many international students who came from nearly 45 countries. Since 1961, more than 50 000 alumni of the Medical University of Varna have lived and worked in more than 40 countries.

Location

The Medical University of Varna lies in the heart of Varna city, which has a population of around 335,949 inhabitants. Varna is the country’s third-largest city and the Black Sea’s fourth-largest city. Varna, often known as Bulgaria’s marine (or summer) capital, is a significant tourist destination and an access point for all the resorts along the northern Bulgarian Black Sea Coast. It also hosts the Bulgarian Navy and merchant marine’s headquarters. The Medical University of Varna is only a 10-minute walk from the major pedestrian area, where locals and visitors enjoy spending their leisure time.

The earliest golden treasure in the world was found in Varna Necropolis and consists of objects dating back to the 4th millennium before Jesus Christ. Varna has century-old traditions in music, visual arts, and book publishing. It has some of the oldest museums and arts festivals in Bulgaria.

History

The university was established in 1960 by decree from the Presidium of the National Assembly of the Republic of Bulgaria, and an order of the Ministry of Health. It opened its doors on the first day of the first academic year in 1960.

All departments and fundamental clinics were established throughout the first ten years, including education and scientific research facilities. The name of Prof. Dr. Paraskev Stoyanov was added to the name Medical University of Varna in 2002. He was credited for establishing the first Bulgarian School of Surgery.

Faculties

The prominent faculties of Medical University of Varna include:

  • Faculty of Medicine: This faculty consists of 20 departments and 18 teaching and research entities, which gives it a superior reputation among students.
  • Faculty of Dental Medicine: The university’s management has created seven different departments for faculty of dental medicine since its establishment in 2006. The faculty provides training and education for dental professionals and awards them with higher degrees. The same thing applies to interns and Ph.D. Students.
  • Faculty of Pharmacy: This faculty hosts eight departments and it begun its journey for the first time in 2008. It provides training on different pharmaceutical disciplines for pharmacy students, interns, and PhD students. The educational syllabus requires full-time study for 5 years and includes a 6-month internship prior to graduation.
  • Faculty of Public Health: The birth of this faculty happened in 2001 and now it has six different departments. Students can choose among many medical majors when they enroll in this faculty, including nursing, public health, health management, rehabilitation, and even spa and thalassotherapy. 
  • The medical College: This faculty began as a Nursing School in 1942. Between 1944 to 1997, however, it changed to the Institute for Nurses, the School for Midwives, and finally the medical college. All this makes the medical college one of the oldest and most magnificent colleges in Bulgaria. 

Admission

Applicants submit several documents to the institution as part of their application and must have completed their secondary school. You should get some of these papers translated and legalized before sending them to the university. Make sure to follow up on the university’s requirements and deadlines, so you don’t miss any step in the process. 

Taking the admittance test is one of the most crucial elements in the admission process at Varna Medical University. It is a unified requirement for all candidates who want to study medicine, dentistry, or pharmacy. It is an online test conducted that contains a variety of question types, such as multiple-choice, true/false, and definitions and explanations questions, and need around an hour and a half to complete. 

Varna Medical University has prepared a textbook that contains sample questions to make this application process less difficult for all applicants. They also provide several admission exams dates that suit most students. Applicants can take the exam again if they fail on the first attempt. 

Student Life & Living Cost

As a student at Varna Medical University, you can join a variety of student groups and associations to build relationships and discover the environment around you. When it comes to living expenses, Verna is strikingly cheaper than other well-known cities in Europe. A decent modern apartment costs roughly 300 EUR per month to rent. However, the cost varies based on the neighborhood and the size of the unit.  The yearly tuition cost for the university ranges from 6000 to 8000 EUR, which is significantly less than other European medical colleges.
